悪を滅するを功と云い善を生ずるを徳と云うなり - while the element toku or doku refers to virtue one acquires by bringing about good.

御義口伝(762頁)

通解

(功徳とは)過去世からの悪業を滅することを功といって、善いことが生ずることを徳というのである。


意訳

功徳の意味とは、信心を実践していくことで、過去世で謗法を犯したゆえの悪い宿業を消し去ることを「功」と呼び、善いことを呼び寄せることを「徳」と呼び、合わせて「功徳(くどく)」と呼ぶのである。

The element ku in the word kudoku .... refers to the merit achieved by wiping out of evil , while the element toku or doku refers to virtue one acquires by bringing about good.

Interpretation (liberal translation)

The meaning of " 功徳  [ Ku-Doku ] " in Japanese, which means merit, By practicing the faith, it is possible to obliterate bad Karma of  because it is committed slander of the Law in the past life. This is referred to as " - [ ku ] ". and you attract concurrently good thing. This is referred to as a "  [ toku or doku ] ". those  combined two characters is the referred to as a "功徳 [ Ku-Doku ]".
