命と申す物は一身第一の珍宝なり - Life is the most precious of all treasures

命と申す物は一身第一（いっしん だいいち）の珍宝（ちんぽう）なり 一日なりとも・これを延る（のぶる）ならば千万両（せんまんりょう）の金（こがね）にもすぎたり、法華経の一代の聖教に超過して いみじき と申すは寿量品（じゅりょうほん）のゆへ（ゆえ）ぞかし


可延定業書（９８６頁）　弘安二年

通解

命というものは、わが身にとって第一の珍しい宝である。一日でも寿命を延ばすならば、一千万両の金よりも尊い。法華経が、釈尊一代の説いた諸教の中で最も勝れているというのは、寿量品のゆえである。


意訳

命とは、どのような財宝よりも最も尊い。一日でも寿命を延ばすことができれば、その一日分、法華経の行者としての使命を全うすることができる。
法華経が仏教の中で最も優れている理由は、「あらゆる生命の中に仏性が存在する」ということが、法華経の如来寿量品第十六に説かれているからである。

 ＊私達が日々実践している勤行の「妙法蓮華経如来寿量品第十六（みょうほうれんげきょう にょうらいじゅりょうほん だい１６」は、この「法華経の如来寿量品第十六」から抜粋してあるものなのです。


English Translations

" On Prolonging One’s Life Span "

Life is the most precious of all treasures. Even one extra day of life is worth more than ten million ryō of gold. [ ryo is The unit of the old Japanese money ]  
The Lotus Sutra surpasses all the other sacred teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime because of the “Life Span” chapter.

Interpretation (liberal translation)

 The life is the most precious of all treasures. 
When also having increased longevity in one day, it's long for that day, and it's possible to fulfill the mission as the ascetic of a Lotus Sutra.
The Lotus Sutra surpasses all the other sacred teachings of the Buddha's lifetime because of the "On Prolonging One’s Life Span" Chapter 16 of Lotus Sutra.
That reason is explained by "Life Span" to read "the Buddha nature exists in all lives.

We everyday chanting  in Gongyo of 
"Myo-ho-renge-kyo, Nyorai-juryou-hon-Dai-Ju-Roku".

湿れる木より火を出し乾ける土より水を儲けんが如く強盛に申すなり - praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
