かつへて（飢えて）食をねがひ（願い）・　渇して（かつして）水をしたう（慕う）がごとく・恋いて（こいて）人を見たきがごとく・　病（やまい）に くすりを たのむがごとく、みめかたち（見目 形）よき人・べに しろいものを つくるがごとく・法華経には信心をいたさせ給へ、さなくしては後悔あるべし
上野殿御返事（刀杖難事）（１５７３頁）弘安二年４月

 通解

飢えた時に食べ物を求めて、のどが渇いた時に水を欲しがるように、恋しい人を見たいように、病気になって薬を頼りにするように、美しい人が紅や白粉（おしろい）をつけるのと同じように、法華経には信心をしていきなさい。そうでなければ後悔するであろう。
意訳

 お腹が空いたら食べ物を欲しがり、喉が乾いたら水を飲みたくなるように、恋をすればその人を見たくなるように、病気にかかったら薬を飲むように、美しい人が化粧をするのと同じように、生命が法華経を求めるようにただ純粋に、自然に信心に励んでいきなさい。そうでなく、自分の心に背いて、無理やりに信心をしたとしても無意味であり、後悔するであろう。

As you crave food when hungry, seek water when thirsty, long to see a lover, beg for medicine when ill, or as a beautiful woman desires powder and rouge, so should you put your faith in the Lotus Sutra. If you do not, you will regret it later.

 Interpretation (liberal translation)

As you crave food when hungry, seek water when thirsty, long to see a lover, beg for medicine when ill, or as a beautiful woman desires powder and rouge, so should you put your faith in the Lotus Sutra. Rather, it is rebelled against own mind, is meaningless even if the forcibly to faith, you will regret it later.
