鉄（くろがね）は炎打てば（きたい うてば）剣（つるぎ）となる 賢聖（けんしょう）は罵詈して（めり して）試みるなるべし


佐渡御書（９５８頁）　文永９年３月

通解

鉄は炎に入れて、熱して鍛え打てば剣となる。賢人、聖人は罵ってみて真価が試されるものである。


意訳

ただの鉄も、炎に焼かれ、何度も鍛え打つことで不純物が表面に現れ、取り除かれて強靭な鋼になり、立派な剣に変わる。
これと同じように、仏法者である私達も、様々な困難に直面し、戦い抜いていくことで、自身の過去世からの宿業が、今世において表面に現れる。
この宿業を取り除くために、「今こそ自分の信心が試されている時だ」と決意し、強い信心で乗り越えることで、自身の宿命転換を成し遂げることができる。
苦難に直面した時こそ、強靭な信心を確立し、強い自分に変わるチャンスなのである。


English Translations

" Letter from Sado "

Iron, when heated in the flames and pounded, becomes a fine sword. Worthies and sages are tested by abuse.

Interpretation (liberal translation)
Just iron is burnt in flame, and it is removed an outcome on the surface, and it is in tough steel, and impurities change to a sword excellent before long by forging it many times, and beating.
In the same way as this, the karma from the past world of own appears on the surface in what we who are a Buddhist fight out in the face of various difficulty in this world.
When "it is time when one's faith is tried now ," decide it from oneself to remove this karma and get over for strong faith, can accomplish change the fate of own.
it is the golden opportunity that establish tough faith when faced a hardship, and can turn into oneself strong.
