このやまひ（病）は仏の御はからひ（おん はからい）か・そのゆへ（ゆえ）は 浄名経（じょうみょうきょう）・涅槃経（ねはんきょう）には 病ある人 仏になるべきよし とかれて（説かれて）候、病によりて道心は をこり（起こり）候なり


妙心尼御前御返事（１４８０頁）　弘安元年８月

通解

 この病は仏の御計らいであろうか。その理由は、浄名経・涅槃経には「病がある人は仏になる」と説かれている。病苦になることによって、初めて自分の生命について考えることで、求道心が起こるものである。

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
