鬼神めらめ此の人をなやますは剣をさかさまに・のむか又大火を いだくか、三世十方の仏の大怨敵となるか - And you demons, by making this man suffer, are you trying to swallow a sword point first, or embrace a raging fire, or become the archenemy of the Buddhas of the ten directions in the three existences?

人も すすめぬ（勧めぬ）に 心中より信じまいらせて・上下万人に あるいは・いさめ（諫め）或は をどし（脅し）候いつるに・ついに捨つる心（すつる こころ）なくて候へば・すでに仏になるべしと 見へ候へば・天魔・外道（てんま・げどう）が 病（やまい）をつけて をどさんと（脅さんと）心み（こころみ）候か、命は かぎり（限り）ある事なり・すこしも・をどろく（驚く）事なかれ、
又 鬼神めら（きじん め達）め 此の人を なやます（悩ます）は 剣（つるぎ）を さかさま（逆さま）に・のむ（飲む）か 又 大火（たいか）を いだく（抱く）か、三世十方の仏（さんぜじっぽう の ほとけ）の 大怨敵（だいおんてき）となるか、あなかしこ・あなかしこ、此の人のやまいを 忽に（たちまち に）なをして（治して）・かへりて まほり（護り）と なりて 鬼道の大苦を ぬくべきか

通解

（この南条時光殿は）だれも法華経の信仰を勧めないのに、心から信仰され、上下万人から法華経の信仰をやめるように言われても、あるいは諌められても、あるいは脅かされながらも、結局信心を捨てる心がなくなっておられる。そして成仏を成し遂げそうになったので、第六天魔王等の魔が、時光殿に病をつけて、信心をやめさせようと脅かしているのであろう。
命は限りがあることであり、少しも驚いてはならない。　

しかし鬼神どもよ、法華経の行者であるこの時光殿を苦しみ悩ますのは、剣を逆に飲むか、大火を抱くか、あるいはまた、三世十方の仏を敵に回し、無間地獄へ落ちる道を選ぶというのか。此の時光殿の病をたちまちに冶して、かえって守護の善神となって鬼道の大苦を免れるべきではないか。


English Translations

" The Proof of the Lotus Sutra "

Many people, both high and low, have admonished or threatened you, but you have refused to give up your faith. Since you now appear certain to attain Buddhahood, perhaps the heavenly devil and evil spirits are using illness to try to intimidate you. Life in this world is limited. Never be even the least bit afraid!

And you demons, by making this man suffer, are you trying to swallow a sword point first, or embrace a raging fire, or become the archenemy of the Buddhas of the ten directions in the three existences? How terrible this will be for you! Should you not cure this man’s illness immediately, act rather as his protectors, and escape from the grievous sufferings that are the lot of demons?
