賢人は 八風と申して 八のかぜに をかされぬ を 賢人と申すなり、利・衰・毀・誉・称・譏・苦・楽なり、をを心は 利あるに・よろこばず・をとろうるに なげかず 等の 事なり、此の 八風に をかされぬ人をば 必ず天はまほらせ給うなり

通解（意訳）
　
　賢人とは八風といって、八種の風に犯されないのを賢人というのである。八風とは利（利益を得る）・衰（衰える/損をする）・毀（非難される）・誉（誉められる）・称（讃えられる）・譏（謗られる）・苦（苦しむ）・楽（楽しむ）である。世間的な利益や褒められたり讃えられたりして、楽しい事が起きても喜ばず、逆に損をしたり、謗られるたりして苦しい事が起きた事を嘆かない、ということである。この八風に犯されない人を、諸天善神は守られるのである。

" The Eight Winds "
　
 Worthy persons deserve to be called so because they are not carried away by the eight winds: prosperity, decline, disgrace, honor, praise, censure, suffering, and pleasure.
 They are neither elated by prosperity nor grieved by decline. The heavenly gods will surely protect one who is unbending before the eight winds.

湿れる木より火を出し乾ける土より水を儲けんが如く強盛に申すなり - praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
