悪象は但肉身をやぶる悪知識は法身をやぶる、悪象の為に・ころされては三悪に至らず・悪知識の為に殺されたるは必ず三悪に至る、此の悪象は但身の為のあだなり、悪知識は善法の為にあだなり

通解（意訳）
　
凶暴な悪象はただ肉身だけを殺すが、悪知識（悪友）は妙法を持った心も身も殺すのである。悪象のために殺されても、地獄界・餓鬼界・畜生界の三悪道に堕ちないが、悪知識のために殺されたなら、必ず三悪道に堕ちる。この悪象はただ身体を殺すだけで、心（信心）を殺されることはないから、ただ身体の仇である。しかし悪知識は、心も身体も殺すがゆえに、善法の仇なのでである。

" Reply to Hoshina Gorō Tarō "
　
A mad elephant can destroy the physical body, but an evil friend destroys the Dharma body*. Even if you are killed by a mad elephant, you will not fall into the three evil paths. But if you are killed by an evil friend, you are certain to fall into them. A mad elephant is merely an enemy of your body, but an evil friend is an enemy of the good Law.
