大願を立てん日本国の位をゆづらむ、法華経をすてて観経等について後生をごせよ、父母の頚を刎ん念仏申さずば、なんどの種種の大難・出来すとも智者に我義やぶられずば用いじとなり、　其の外の大難・風の前の塵なるべし、我日本の柱とならむ我日本の眼目とならむ我日本の大船とならむ等とちかいし願やぶるべからず。

通解（意訳）
　
いまこそ大願を立てよう。法華経をすてて観経等の信仰に入り、後生の極楽往生を願うならば、日本国の位を譲ろうとの誘惑があろうとも、また念仏を申さないならば、父母の首を斬りはねるとの脅迫があろうとも、またその他の種々な大難が出来しようとも、智者に日蓮の教義が破られない限り、絶対に他の教義にはしたがうことはない。
この智者にわが義をやぶられるという、絶対にあり得ない難事、それ以外の大難は、風の前の塵のごとき問題にならない事件である。
末法において、日蓮が主師親の三徳を以って、日本国の一切衆生を救うために、われは日本の柱となろう、われは日本の眼目となろう、われは日本の大船となろう等と誓い願った事は、絶対に破ることがないのである。

" The Opening of the Eyes " Part two.
　
 Here I will make a great vow. Though I might be offered the rulership of Japan if I would only abandon the Lotus Sutra, accept the teachings of the Meditation Sutra, and look forward to rebirth in the Pure Land, though I might be told that my father and mother will have their heads cut off if I do not recite the Nembutsu—whatever obstacles I might encounter, so long as persons of wisdom do not prove my teachings to be false, I will never yield! All other troubles are no more to me than dust before the wind.
 I will be the pillar of Japan. I will be the eyes of Japan. I will be the great ship of Japan. This is my vow, and I will never forsake it!

湿れる木より火を出し乾ける土より水を儲けんが如く強盛に申すなり - praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
