命をば三千大千世界（さんぜんだいせんせかい）にても買はぬ物（かわぬ もの）にて候と 仏は説かせ給へり、米は命を継ぐ物（つぐもの）なり
譬えば（たとえば）米は油の如く 命は燈（ともしび）の如し、法華経は燈の如く 行者は油の如し

通解

命というものは、全宇宙の財宝をもってしても買うことができないものであると、仏は説かれている。
（ご供養として頂いた）米は、命を継ぐものである。譬えていえば、米は油で、命は燈火のようなものであり、命という燈火が途切れないように、お米という油を足すのである。
これと同じように、法華経は燈火であり、法華経の行者は油のようなものである。法華経の行者という油がなければ、法華経という教えは途絶えてしまうのである。

 Buddha says that life is something that cannot be purchased even for the price of an entire major world system.

Rice is what sustains life. It is like the oil that sustains the life of the lamp. The Lotus Sutra is a lamp, and its votary is the oil that sustains it.
