今年の寒さは生れて以来、覚えがない程です。雪などの降り積もっているところは大変なことです。志しのある人でもこの身延の山中を訪れがたいのに、あなたが訪れてくださったことは、並々ならない御志しの表れではないでしょうか。

 I must say that I do not recall at any time in my life such cold as we are now experiencing. The snow has fallen and piled up in great quantity. Even those with a strong resolve find it difficult to visit me.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
