此れ（これ）偏に（ひとえ に）貴辺の（きへん の）法華経の御信心の ふかき故（ゆえ）なり　根ふかければ（ね 深ければ）枝さかへ（えだ 栄え）源（みなもと）遠ければ流長し（ながれ ながし）と申して　一切の経は根あさく流ちかく　法華経は根ふかく源とをし、末代・悪世（まつだい・あくせ）までも・つきず（尽きず）・さかう（栄う）べし


四条金吾殿御返事（源遠長流御書）（１１８０頁）　弘安元年９月
通解

（あなたが今回の苦難を乗り越えた）この事は、ひとえに貴方の法華経の信心が深かったからである。
木の根が深ければその枝は栄え、水源が遠ければ川の流れは長いと言われるように、法華経以外の諸教は根が浅く流れは近く、反対に法華経は根が深くその源は遠い。
（貴方のように信心強盛な方がいるからこそ）法華経は末法、悪世までも尽きることなく栄え、流布していくのである。


English Translations

" The Farther the Source, the Longer the Stream "

 This [ You got over this hardship ] is solely because of your deep faith in the Lotus Sutra.

The deeper the roots, the more luxuriant the branches. The farther the source, the longer the stream. All sutras other than the Lotus Sutra have shallow roots and short streams, while the Lotus Sutra has deep roots and a distant source. That is why the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai stated that the Lotus Sutra would survive and spread even in the evil latter age. [ Because a prosperous person needs belief like you. ]

    この御書の一節の様に仏法西還の一端を担いたい決意でいっぱいです。新しい日中ODAの水道技術交流のための試案に「源遠流長」を引用させて頂き、世界水の日にまとめ上げました。
