妙と申す事は開（かい）と云う（いう）事なり 世間に財（たから）を積める蔵に鍵なければ開く事かたし 開かざれば蔵の内（うち）の財を見ず

法華経題目抄（９４３頁）

通解

南無妙法蓮華経の「妙」とは、本来自身に備わっている仏の境涯を開くということである。世間のたとえで言うと、財宝が詰まった蔵があっても、蔵を開く鍵がなければ開くことができない。蔵が開かなければ、蔵の中の財宝を見ることはできないのである。


英訳

"The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra"

Hence the character myo of "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" means to open the way of attain Buddhahood. If there is a storehouse full of treasures but no key, then it cannot be opened, and if it cannot be opened, then the treasure inside cannot be seen.
