法華経を信ずる人あり・或は火のごとく信ずる人もあり・或は水のごとく信ずる人もあり、聴聞する時は・もへたつばかりをもへども・とをざかりぬれば・すつる心あり、水のごとくと申すは・いつも・たいせず信ずるなり

通解（意訳）
　
 法華経を信ずる人がいる。あるいは火のように信ずる人もあり、あるいは水の流れるように信ずる人もいる。
 火のように信ずる人というのは、法華経の法門を聴いたその時は、燃え立つような信心が沸き起こるように思うけれども、時が経つにつれて遠ざかると、その心を忘れてしまうのである。
 水のように信ずる人というのは、常に後退せずに信ずる人をいうのである。　
　
English Translations

" The Two Kinds of Faith "
　
 Today there are people who have faith in the Lotus Sutra. The belief of some is like fire while that of others is like water.
 When the former listen to the teachings, their passion flares up like fire, but as time goes on, they tend to discard their faith.
 To have faith like water means to believe continuously without ever regressing.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
