" Reply to the Lay Nun Nichigon "

Now there is no need to attempt to surmise yourself how things will go.
Whether or not your prayer is answered will depend on your faith ;[if it is not] I will in no way be to blame.
When water is clear, the moon is reflected. When the wind blows, the trees shake. Our minds are like the water. Faith that is weak is like muddy water, while faith that is brave is like clear water. Understand that the trees are like principles, and the wind that shakes them is like the recitation of the sutra.

Interpretation (liberal translation)

About benefit of the faith, you must not guess benefit of Gohonzon by interpretation of the selfishness in this.
All depends on your faith whether a wish comes true, or it does not come true even if Nichiren prayed for your wish as anything after all. It is never fault of Nichiren.
For example, the moon is reflected in the water neatly if water is clean. If wind blows, the branch of the tree shakes.
In this way, the heart of the person is like the water. It virtually has muddy water that faith is weak. It is virtually clear water of that faith is strongly manly. The tree is like the reason of the Buddhism. It is something like practice of your faith that wind shakes the tree.
One necessary for you is to work hard to deepen faith of your own without neglecting Gongyo and Chanting the Daimoku of morning and evening. and, facing severe reality, it is to make an effort so that a wish accomplishes it.
The wish does not accomplish it only by your depending on Gohonzon, and thinking, "I manage it if I pray for Daimoku", and chanting the Daimoku.
If this neglects the effort that oneself shakes a tree, the tree shakes; there is not. It is reason same as this.
The thing necessary for you is not only to deepen your faith definitely to grant a wish.
It is faith of the practice training yourself, and moves Gohonzon of "Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo" which is reason of the Buddhism, reason of nature of right Buddhism.
And with it, you practice an effort to change reality. When practice of the faith and your effort were accompanied, Benefit of Gohonzon appears.
 Understand this thing well.
