　「鬼神達め、法華経の行者であるこの人（南条時光）を病気で悩ますとは、剣を逆に飲むか、または大火を抱くか、さらには三世十方の仏の大怨敵となろうとするのか。あなかしこ、これを恐ろしく思うのであれば、この人の病をたちまちに冶して、かえって守護の善神となって、鬼神らこそ餓鬼道の大苦から免れるべきではないか。」

と、病気に倒れた南条時光への激励のお手紙の文末に、この御文を書き、愛弟子を病から救おうとする師匠の大慈悲の御心をあらわされたのである。


English Translations

" The Proof of the Lotus Sutra "
　
 And you demons, by making this man suffer, are you trying to swallow a sword point first, or embrace a raging fire, or become the archenemy of the Buddhas of the ten directions in the three existences? How terrible this will be for you! Should you not cure this man’s illness immediately, act rather as his protectors, and escape from the grievous sufferings that are the lot of demons?
[ Nichiren sent a letter to" Tokimitsu Nanjo " breaking down from sickness. These sentences were written on its end of sentence. And Nichiren showed a heart of mercy of the master who tries to rescue a beloved pupil from a disease. ]

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
