通解（意訳）
鳥と虫とは、泣くといっても涙を落とすことはない。日蓮は泣かないが涙がひまなく止まらないのである。しかしこの涙は世間の事を考えて流す涙ではない。ただ、ひとえに法華経を弘めゆく使命に目覚めたゆえの、歓喜の涙なのである。

Birds and crickets cry, but never shed tears. I, Nichiren, do not cry, but my tears flow ceaselessly. I shed my tears not for worldly affairs but solely for the sake of the Lotus Sutra.

Interpretation (liberal translation) 
Nichiren's tears are for the pleasure and awakening to the his missions of propagating the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
