釈迦如来の 御ためには 提婆達多こそ 第一の 善知識なれ、

今の世間を見るに 人を よくなすものは かたうどよりも 強敵が 人をば・よくなしけるなり

しゃかにょらい の おんため には だいばだった こそ だいいち の ぜんちしき なれ、いま の せけん を みる に ひと を よく なす もの は かたうど よりも ごうてき が ひと をば・よく なしけるなり

通解（意訳）

釈迦如来にとっては、釈尊の弟子でありながら嫉妬に狂って退転し、釈尊を迫害した提婆達多こそが、釈尊の正しさを証明した第一の善知識ではなかったか。

今の世間を見ると、人をより良く成長させ、強くするものは、味方よりも強敵が人をよくしているのである。

Interpretation (liberal translation) 

Devadatta was disciple of the Shakyamuni-Buddha, but he had jealous and grudge against Shakyamuni-Buddha.

But, the Shakyamuni-Buddha's correctness was proved by the Evil attitude of the Devadatta.

In the same, Those that grow and strengthen people better are stronger enemies than allies.
