釈迦如来の御ためには提婆達多こそ第一の善知識なれ、
今の世間を見るに人をよくなすものはかたうどよりも強敵が人をば・よくなしけるなり
しゃかにょらい の おんため には だいばだった こそ だいいち の ぜんちしき なれ、いま の せけん を みる に ひと を よく なす もの は かたうど よりも ごうてき が ひと をば・よく なしけるなり

通解（意訳）
釈迦如来にとっては、釈尊の弟子でありながら嫉妬に狂って退転し、釈尊を迫害した提婆達多こそが、釈尊の正しさを証明した第一の善知識ではなかったか。
今の世間を見ると、人をより良く成長させ、強くするものは、味方よりも強敵が人をよくしているのである。

Interpretation (liberal translation)
Devadatta was disciple of the Shakyamuni Buddha, but he had jealous and grudge against Shakyamuni.
Devadatta was He proved the correctness of the Shakyamuni-Buddha.
In the same, Those that grow and strengthen people better are stronger enemies than allies.
