甲斐（かい）無き者なれども・たすくる者強ければたうれず - Even a feeble person will not stumble if those supporting him are strong

夫れ（それ）木をうえ候には大風吹か候へども つよきすけ（強き扶け）をかひぬれば（介ぬれば）・たうれず、本より生いて候木なれども根の弱きは・たうれぬ、甲斐（かい）無き者なれども・たすくる者強ければたうれず、すこし健の者も独（けなげの者もひとり）なれば悪しき（あしき）みちには・たうれぬ

三三蔵祈雨事（１４６８頁）　建治元年閏六月

通解

そもそも、木を植えた場合、大風が吹いたとしても、強い支柱で支えてあれば倒れない。元々生えていた木であっても、根が弱ければ倒れてしまう。
弱くて不甲斐ない者であっても、助けるものが強ければ倒れない。すこし強くで頑強な者であっても、独りであれば悪い道では倒れてしまう。


英訳

"Three Tripitaka Masters Pray for Rain"

When a tree has been transplanted,though fierce winds may blow, it will not topple if it has a firm stake to hold it up. but even a tree that has grown up in place may fall over if its roots are weak.
Even a feeble person will not stumble if those supporting him are strong, but a person of considerable strength, when alone, may fall down on an uneven path.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
