「必ず心の固きに仮つて神の守り則ち強し」云云、神の護ると申すも人の心つよきによるとみえて候、法華経はよきつるぎなれども・つかう人によりて物をきり候か。
四条金吾殿御返事

通解（意訳）
「必ず心の堅固によって、神の守護すなわち強し」とある。これは諸天善神の守護といっても、人の信心の強さによって変わる、ということである。法華経はよい剣であるが、使う人によって斬れ味が変わるのである。

English Gosho
 “The stronger one’s faith, the greater the protection of the gods.” This means that the protection of the gods depends on the strength of one’s faith. The Lotus Sutra is a fine sword, but its might depends on the one who wields it.

湿れる木より火を出し乾ける土より水を儲けんが如く強盛に申すなり - praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
