通解（意訳）
（愚かな弟子達が）「日蓮御房は私達の師匠ではあられるが、余りにも強盛すぎる。我らは柔らかに法華経を弘めよう」と言っていることは、ホタルの光が太陽や月の光を笑い、蟻塚が華山（約２ｋｍある中国の山）を見下し、井戸や小川が大河や海を侮り、カササギが鸞鳥や鳳凰（らんちょう・ほうおう、いずれも伝説上の鳥）を笑うようなものである。笑うようなものである。

English Gosho
 The renegade disciples say, “Though the priest Nichiren is our teacher, he is too forceful. We will spread the Lotus Sutra in a more peaceful way.”
 In so asserting, they are being as ridiculous as fireflies laughing at the sun and moon, an anthill belittling Mount Hua*, wells and brooks despising the river and the ocean, or a magpie mocking a phoenix. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
