名を揚るか名をくだすか - This will determine whether you win honor or disgrace your name.

但 偏に思い切るべし、今年の世間を鏡とせよ 若干の人の死ぬるに 今まで生きて有りつるは 此の事に あはん為なりけり、

此れこそ 宇治川を渡せし所よ・是こそ 勢多を渡せし所よ・名を揚るか 名をくだすか なり、

人身は受け難く法華経は信じ難しとは是なり

ただ ひとえ に おもいきる べし、ことし の せけん を かがみ と せよ そこばく の ひと の しぬる に いままで いきて ありつる は この こと に あわん ため なりけり、

これこそ うじがわ を わたせし ところよ・これこそ せた を わたせし ところよ・な を あぐるか な を くだすか なり、

じんしん は うけがたく ほけきょう は しんじ がたし とは これなり

通解（意訳）

（この度の試練に臨むにあたっては、）ただひとえに思い切りなさい。

今年の世間の様子を鏡としなさい。多くの人が疫病や餓死、内乱などで死んだのに、あなたが今まで生き永らえてきたのは、この試練に遭う為なのである。あなたがこの法華経によって試練を乗り越えることで、法華経の実証を証明するという使命があるからである。

これこそ、戦いの要諦であり数々の名将達が勝ち超えた難関である、宇治川を渡るというところであり、これこそ勢多川を渡るというところである。勝って名をあげるか名をくだすか、人生を決める大きな境目である。

人間として生まれることは難しく、法華経は信じ難いとはこのことである。

You must simply make up your mind.

Look at the world this year as a mirror. The reason that you have survived until now when so many have died was so that you would meet with this affair.

This is where you will cross the Uji River. This is where you will ford the Seta. This will determine whether you win honor or disgrace your name.

This is what is meant when it is said that it is difficult to be born as a human being, and that it is difficult to believe in the Lotus Sutra.

Interpretation (liberal translation) 

In the world, many people died of plague, starvation, and rebellion, but you are still alive.

But Actually the reason is for you meet and overcome this hardship.

Your mission is to overcome this hardship for religion of this Lotus Sutra, and prove that Lotus Sutra is the right law.

This is like that Crosses the Uji River or Seto for win the battle which examples of the difficulty that many of the great commanders have won.

And it is a big borderline for governs the victory of your life.

Commentary

Uji and Seta River: In ancient times, it marked the southeastern line of defense for Kyoto, the capital, and was the site of several famous battles.

Because of its strategic importance, whether or not one succeeded in crossing the Uji River determined one’s troops’ victory or defeat. and the Seta River was also another strategic point of defense.

Like that, “Crossing to Uji River” and “Fording to Seta” have same meaning: winning decisively.
