この佐渡の地で、遠藤殿の様々な守護がなければ、日蓮の命は永らえられたであろうか。また、今回の佐渡流罪の赦免を受け、生きて本土へ帰ることができたであろうか。何もない佐渡に居ながら、数々の重要な書物を、我が弟子達に書き記す事ができた。この日蓮一代の行功は、ひとえに遠藤左衛門殿をはじめ、佐渡でお世話になった方々のおかげである。

 Without your protection, could I possibly have sustained my life? Could I have survived to be pardoned?

Interpretation (liberal translation)
When there is no various protection of Mr. Endo at Sado in a banishment place, would Nichiren's life be able to continue? And would I be able to receive indulgence of this Sado banishment, live and return to a mainland?

While I was in Sado, it was possible to write many important books for my pupils. That's here thanks to Mr. Endo Saemon and the people who were under care at Sado.

蒼蝿驥尾に附して万里を渡り 碧蘿松頭に懸りて千尋を延ぶ - A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet.
