病あれば死ぬべしといふ事不定なり、このやまひは仏の御はからひか・そのゆへは浄名経・涅槃経には病ある人仏になるべきよしとかれて候、病によりて道心はをこり候なり

通解（意訳）
「病気にかかったら必ず死ぬ」という事はない。
（太田入道殿がかかった）この病は、仏の御はからいであろうか。
その理由は浄名経・涅槃経には病がある人は仏になる、と説かれている。
病気にかかって初めて生命の大切さが分かり、「人間の生死とは何か」という、仏道を求める心が起こるのである。

English Gosho
 It is not certain that, because one is ill, one will die.
 And could not this illness of your husband’s be the Buddha’s design, because the Vimalakīrti and Nirvana sutras both teach that sick people will surely attain Buddhahood?
Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way [ of the Buddhahood ].
